Italian tennis ace Camila Giorgi is at the center of a COVID-19 vaccine controversy, in which her family doctor alleged the athlete inquired about receiving a false certificate of proof that she received the jab.
When speaking with the Italian publication “Corriere del Veneto” on Saturday, Daniela Grillone, Giorgi’s family doctor, claimed that “none of the vaccines against” the tennis pro or her loved ones “have actually been administered.”
“The Giorgi family has been under treatment with me for a long time. Camila Giorgi suffered from the so-called tennis elbow,” Grillone said, according to Yahoo Sports Australia.
“Shortly before the beginning of summer, she had come asking for the possibility of obtaining false proof of all the mandatory vaccines, as well as the Covid vaccine. I can confirm with absolute certainty that none of the vaccines against the Giorgi family have actually been administered,” Grillone continued.
Last month, it was reported that Giorgi — who is currently ranked 66th in the world — was being investigated for allegedly acquiring false vaccination documentation. Grillone, meanwhile, was arrested in February of last year for allegedly administering fake serums, according to News.com.au.
Grillone said she is “deeply upset and sorry for my action.”
The WTA said in a statement to News.com.au that it is “aware of the allegations and are currently monitoring the situation and any investigations that may be brought forward.”
Giorgi competed at last year’s Australian Open and U.S. Open; both countries required proof of vaccination for travelers at the time. As of July, travelers entering Australia no longer have to provide proof of COVID vaccination. Giorgi is set to compete at this year’s tournament, which gets underway on Monday, Jan. 16.
Novak Djokovic, who is not vaccinated, was deported from Australia last year after trying to enter the country for the Australian Open. He’s scheduled to play in this year’s tournament.
